What we believe makes a better sauna.

We are not neutral about the heat bathers feel, the air they breathe, the path of löyly, or whether the room can exit, clean, and dry safely. These are the judgments behind our guides—and the tradeoffs that keep them useful in real homes.

The bather is the brief

We judge a sauna by what a person feels on the bench: even convective warmth, breathable air, controllable löyly, and no cold-feet penalty. A peak thermometer number cannot rescue bad geometry or stale air.

Design from the ceiling down

Start with the upper bench about 100–120 cm below the ceiling, then place the foot bench about 45 cm lower and, when the system allows, at or above the stone line. These are planning baselines—not permission to ignore the exact manual, code, or accessibility.

Ventilation serves people first

Fresh air is part of the heat experience, not just a drying afterthought. Mechanical and gravity systems need different layouts; many mechanically ventilated electric rooms work best with supply near or above the heater, low exhaust away from it, and a separate high drying path.

Drying needs a complete assembly

We favor one continuous heat-tolerant vapor-control strategy, no accidental double barriers, a small cavity behind interior cladding, cleanable floors, drainage where practical, and a deliberate post-session drying path. Moisture details are performance details.

Choose heaters by the heat they create

Adjusted room load, stone capacity, airflow, radiant comfort, clearances, controls, certification, maintenance, and service matter more than brand mythology. Electric is the low-friction default for most homes; wood is right when tending the fire is part of the experience.

Use glass with restraint

A door light or modest window can improve connection and safety. Large glass areas add heat load, reduce forgiving wood surface, and can make the room feel harsher. Use safety glazing where required and size the heater for every uninsulated surface.

Cedar is valid, not mandatory

Cedar can make an excellent sauna. It is not the definition of one. Aspen, alder, spruce, and other suitable softwoods may offer a quieter aroma, while thermally modified wood earns our preference where movement and weathering matter.

Safety starts in the floor plan

The door should open outward and never trap a bather. Manufacturer clearances, guards where specified, sensor placement, cleanable floors, safe glazing, lighting, and service access belong in the first drawing, not the final punch list.

Best practice without purity tests

We say what works best and why, then show how to compromise deliberately for an existing room, budget, climate, code, or accessibility need. A constrained sauna can still be excellent when its tradeoffs are understood and managed.

Löyly is the reference point

A traditional sauna heats a room with hot stones and allows water on those stones. Infrared can be useful heat, but it is a different experience. We label it honestly instead of treating every hot enclosure as interchangeable.

Cold is optional. Claims need evidence.

You do not need an ice bath to finish a good sauna. You also do not need a miracle claim to justify enjoying heat, quiet, conversation, and routine. We separate established precautions from associations, mechanisms, and marketing.

We lean toward proven traditional electric heat for most homes, then narrow by adjusted room load, stone capacity and airflow, radiant comfort, layout, controls, service, and the problem the heater must solve.

A compact wall-mounted workhorse with built-in-control options. Start here when simplicity, quick heat, and a smaller equipment budget matter more than a large stone basket.

Tradeoff

Less stone mass produces a sharper, faster heat character. Confirm the exact North American model, room range, controls, and clearances.

HUUM HIVE or HIVE Mini

Stone mass and softer löyly

A strong option when the room has enough floor area and you want a generous exposed stone surface. We favor HIVE over a wall-mounted basket when the layout comfortably supports it.

Tradeoff

It needs more room, a separate control system, correct stone packing, and careful sizing. High stone mass also changes warm-up behavior.

A useful wall-mounted choice when a floor-standing basket will not fit. It combines a compact footprint with substantial exposed stone and app-capable controls.

Tradeoff

Treat the safety rail, heat diverter, controller, stone packing, and current clearances as parts of the system, not optional afterthoughts.

Rooms with stubborn heat stratification

Consider the air-mixing system when even head-to-foot comfort matters more than chasing the highest thermometer number, especially with low benches or high thermal mass.

Tradeoff

It is a more complex climate system. Plan clearances, controls, service access, acoustics, and the intended heat profile before committing.

Where our wood bias lands

Stable wood makes the rest of the design easier.

We prefer thermally modified wood when repeated heat, humidity, and outdoor weather make movement and durability central to the project. Cedar remains a valid choice, while aspen, alder, and spruce can bring lower aroma or a different feel. Species is a design choice. Stability, touch, grade, and detailing are performance choices.

Thermo-aspen

Our default clean, modern interior wood. It is stable, comfortable to touch, and works well for walls and benches when the profile is correct.

Thermo-alder

A warmer, tighter-grained option that is especially convincing on benches and detail work.

Thermo-spruce

The value choice for a darker, more rustic room and a practical exterior material when the grade and profile suit the assembly.
